Made for 135 million yuan (about US$20 million), a staggering budget in China, "Aftershock" was already creating waves weeks before its July 22 opening in Chinese cinemas. Reports say its premiere earlier this month in a stadium in Tangshan, where part of the film is set, left a great number of the thousands in attendance in tears.

Many film-industry insiders believe that "Aftershock," playing on an unprecedented 4,000-plus screens in China, could become the first Chinese film to break 500 million yuan (about US$74 million) at the box office. Mr. Feng's last movie, a small, endearing 2008 romantic comedy called "If You Are the One," holds the record for Chinese films, having grossed more than 310 million yuan ($45 million). (In a few weeks, Mr. Feng will begin shooting "If You Are the One, Part 2," aiming for release during China's key December-to-February holiday season.)
